Effective Practice – Regional Spotlights

Published:

We have launched the first of our Effective Practice Regional Spotlights, highlighting strong probation work observed during our inspections across Yorkshire and the Humber.

We already produce effective practice guides for both youth and probation services – setting out where we see our standards delivered well, in practice – alongside our thematic reports, pulling examples from across our core inspection programmes. Through this, we have developed a range of guides and resources that share best practice and key guidance.

They are aimed at a range of audiences, intended to support practitioners, middle managers and strategic leaders to reflect on their own experiences and consider how they may apply the key learning points in their own work.

Since 2022 we have produced 23 effective practice guides, hosted periodic roadshows on our thematic topics and delivered effective practice slots at practitioner forums and regional events for both youth justice and probation services.

Work highlighted in the guides as ‘effective’ has been rolled out nationally, for example the CASPO from our MAPPA guide, and we also engage directly with university colleagues to consider ways to support learners on their probation qualifications.

In our new Regional Spotlights, we set out the strongest case examples of effective practice from each PDU in the region, across several themes related to case management.

Our aim is to highlight that, even where our inspections find challenges and areas for improvement, we still find many areas of strength and excellent delivery.

We also hope they will provide an opportunity for learning across regions, giving practitioners access to new ideas and opportunities to improve.
