Interim response to Probation Reset consultation
In August 2024 we consulted with stakeholders about our proposals for inspecting probation services following the operational changes arising from ‘Probation Reset’.1
These operational changes created different levels of service delivery including probation service contact with individuals being suspended where specific criteria were met.
As an independent inspectorate we aim to focus on those things that make a difference to the quality of work with individuals, and we strive to inspect in a way that is fair and proportionate. To continue to achieve this in the light of the operational changes, we proposed to amend the questions we ask when we inspect work in cases where contact has been suspended.
Since this consultation was published, the Lord Chancellor has made further announcements focussed on the management of high-risk cases, and we continue to await the outcomes of the Independent Sentencing Review.
We will therefore be pausing our response in the short term so the implications of this work can be fully reviewed. Following this, our consultation response and next steps will be published as soon as possible.
