Warwickshire Youth Justice Service, rated ‘Good’ following inspection
Warwickshire Youth Justice Service (YJS) has received an overall rating of ‘Good’ following an inspection of work with children and victims by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Probation.
Chief Inspector of Probation, Martin Jones, said: “At Warwickshire YJS we found inquisitive staff with a thorough understanding of the needs of children, and who were committed to continuously developing and improving their practice.”
Inspectors found many strengths in assessing activity where practitioners considered the impact of trauma, neurodiversity, and communication difficulties to gain a better understanding of the children they were working with. Planning was strong, with practitioners co-producing plans with children, families and relevant services.
However, the service was on a journey to improve its delivery of victim services. While inspectors found individual work with victims was sufficient and noted that the restorative justice offer was strong, organisational arrangements needed to improve, and processes needed to be further scrutinised to ensure greater consistency.
Mr Jones continued, “The team at Warwickshire YJS have much to be proud of. With some further focus on improving the offer to victims, I have no doubt this service can excel.”
The Inspectorate’s report makes four recommendations. Two are for the Warwickshire YJS team, including to ensure planning is of a consistently high quality and focuses on how to keep the child and community safe. One recommendation is for Warwickshire YJS and Warwickshire Police to review processes for initial contact with victims to ensure these are consistent across both out-of-court resolutions and court orders. One recommendation is for the YJS management board to better gather and evaluate data in relation to victim consent rates.
