Effective Practice Guide: Children subject to or at risk of remand in youth detention accommodation

This guide has been designed to explore effective and developing practice in relation to youth remand for both youth justice services and their operational and strategic partners.

Based on effective practice identified during our joint thematic inspection of work with children subject to remand in youth detention.

We start by setting out what we mean by bail and remand before identifying our standards and expectations and how we tailored these to the topic of children subject to remand.

We then look at the considerations which are needed to prevent unnecessary remand episodes and to facilitate alternative bail arrangements. Next, we move to consider practice that we have found during our inspection that increases the likelihood of positive outcomes for this cohort of children.
